Anniversary: The Strangest of Sea Serpents – Matt Billie

Matt Bille rightly reminds us that “the whole sea serpent business is hopelessly buried in myth and hype and hoax,” which muddies the waters of a case from 1905 off South America. Reliable witnesses saw a “great sea serpent,” which is still unidentified, but hope remains that it may an unknown species awaiting discovery. And in Dr. Beach’s latest mermaid report, we have The Mermaid’s Tail in Argyll from 1811, the subject of Dr Beach’s lengthy piece, which is of particular interest because of the way the news spread into the wider world. Note however that the witnesses and not the mermaid[s] were aged 23 and 8. (LP)
